The Western Box Turtle is a hardy terrestrial turtle native to the grasslands, prairies, and semi-arid regions of the central and western United States. It is recognized for its beautifully patterned shell featuring intricate yellow lines or starburst markings over a dark background. Like other box turtles, it has a hinged plastron that allows it to tightly close its shell for protection from predators and harsh weather. Western Box Turtles are adaptable omnivores, feeding on insects, worms, fruits, flowers, and other vegetation.
