The Mexican Box Turtle is a large, terrestrial box turtle native to northeastern Mexico. It is known for its high-domed shell, sturdy build, and attractive markings that can include olive, brown, yellow, or orange patterns. Like other box turtles, it has a hinged plastron that allows it to completely close its shell for protection. Mexican Box Turtles inhabit humid forests, scrublands, and grassy areas, where they feed on insects, worms, fruits, mushrooms, and vegetation.
