The African bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus), also known as the pixie frog, is one of the largest frog species native to sub-Saharan Africa. Males can reach up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length and weigh over 1.4 kg (3 pounds), while females are typically half the size. Their robust bodies are olive-green with lighter underbellies, and males often display yellowish throats during the breeding season. These frogs inhabit diverse environments, including savannas, shrublands, and temporary water bodies. They are opportunistic carnivores, consuming insects, small mammals, birds, reptiles, and even other amphibians. Notably, African bullfrogs exhibit unique parental care; males guard their tadpoles and may even dig channels to prevent their pools from drying out.
