Livyatan was a giant predatory whale that lived many years ago during the Miocene epoch. Comparable in size to today’s sperm whales—up to 17 meters (56 feet) long—it was equipped with massive, conical teeth in both jaws, some over 30 cm (12 inches) long, making it one of the few whales known to hunt other large marine mammals. Livyatan likely competed with the giant shark Megalodon for prey in ancient seas. Its name, inspired by the biblical sea monster Leviathan, reflects its fearsome role as an apex predator of prehistoric oceans.
