The Basiliscus plumifrons, commonly known as the plumed basilisk or green basilisk, is a striking lizard native to the humid lowland rainforests of Central America, particularly from Honduras to Panama. It is easily recognised by its vivid green coloration, adorned with bluish or white markings, and the prominent crests found on the head, back, and tail of adult males—features that give it a distinctly “prehistoric” appearance.
Renowned for its remarkable agility, the plumed basilisk has earned the nickname “Jesus Christ lizard” due to its ability to run short distances across water surfaces using its long toes with fringed scales. This adaptation helps it escape predators with surprising speed. A diurnal and arboreal species, Basiliscus plumifrons feeds on a varied diet of insects, fruits, flowers, and small vertebrates. It is also capable of remaining submerged for extended periods when threatened.
